Punk is a sub-genre of
Rock that is widely known for its anti-establishment lyrics paired with fast,
short, and aggressive instrumentation. Punk Rock blasted its way into the
Rock scene in the 70’s with help from UK bands such as The Sex Pistols and The
Clash. Punk Rock rapidly spread to the United States with the introduction of
bands such as The Dead Kennedy’s and The Misfits and more recently, Pennywise
and The Vandals.
Indie Rock, better
known as Independent Rock, is a subculture all its own. Indie bands are named so
for being sponsored by independent rather than major record labels. Indie music
has a more “Garage Band” feel, but is just as popular as contemporary rock.
Bands on the forefront of the Indie movement include Interpol, The Libertines
and Franz Ferdinand.
New Wave is a sub-genre
of Punk Rock music that was popularized in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. New
Wave has musical styles rooted in ska and funk, utilizing keyboards which
separates it from being Punk Rock. Bands that are considered to be New Wave
include Blondie, David Bowie and the English Beat.
