John Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina. He was once a part of the Navy and played in the Navy Band. Later on went back to being a civilian and studied Jazz music with composer and guitarist Dennis Sandole. John Coltrane began his career when he was asked by trumpeter Miles Davis to join his band called First Great Quintet. Together with him were Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones on Drums and Red Garland on piano. Being with the group developed his skills and expertise in jazz music. He was very creative with his creation of jazz music; and organized more than fifty recording sessions in his recording career. He also appeared on other artists albums like trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. John Coltrane is also known to have done a lot of live performances at the Village Vanguard, a famous Jazz Club in New York City during 1950s. John Coltrane, until now, is considered as the most influential jazz artist, since he was said to have influenced innumerable artists with his talent. A few of his successful albums are Blue Train, A Love Supreme, Coltrane and Giant Steps, which is a compilation of his original compositions. In 1967, John Coltrane died at age 40. But his music still remains to influence jazz music up to this time.
